Diploma of Language Studies

No room for a language in your degree?

The Diploma of Language Studies is our most flexible way to study a language. The program will provide you with strong language skills and cultural understanding, without impacting on your other studies.

The Diploma of Language Studies allows you to study a language either alongside your undergraduate or postgraduate degree, or after you have completed undergraduate studies. The Diploma is designed as a separate qualification so that you won’t face problems with trying to fit in another major or additional junior credit points. It is also ideal for people who are not studying but have already completed an undergraduate degree.

You can even study select languages in Accelerated mode, and complete your diploma in just 15 months.

Apply online for the Diploma of Language Studies.

Please note: Applications for standard mode close 31 January to commence in Semester 1 of that year. Applications for accelerated mode for Semester 2, 2018 will open 23 July and close on 3 September to commence in the December intensive that year.

The Diploma is offered in

Standard mode
If you take the standard mode, you complete 48 credit points (eight units of study). This is normally studied during semester, part time over three years, with a maximum time limit of six years. Please note that if you study in this mode you will need to either overload or reduce your study load for your main degree.

The requirements for the Diploma in standard mode follow the same structure for obtaining a major in a language. The accelerated mode follows the same structure for obtaining a major in a language except the two required cultural units are offered online to facilitate the intensive nature of the mode. Requirements for majors are laid out in the Arts and Social Sciences Handbook.

For further information, see the Frequently Asked Questions and information about the units offered.

Please note: Regardless of the mode you commence in, you are able to select either standard or accelerated mode units. While you are limited by when the units are offered, you are able to switch modes at any time. Please note that you have up to 6 years to complete the diploma from enrolment.
